Making games should be for anyone.
Stone Sprite Games was founded with the idea that physical games are a community builder, so they should be created by communities. Rather than relying on the same old games designed by the biggest publishers, because those are the ones on the shelves at the department stores, we want to play games made by all kinds of people!
We think everyone should have at least one game on their shelf that very few others know about- preferably more than one! Stone Sprite Games aims to connect independent designers with people who are curious about or interested in new experiences. That way, the smallest of games can become someone’s favorite. In that way, the newest of creators can bring joy to family or a group of friends.
We also know that learning to play a new game is hard! So we work with our designers to make sure the rule books are clear and complete, but also to create video demonstrations explaining how to play for those who don’t have the patience or desire to read through a lengthy explanation.
The Origin Story
My name is Rafael Lopez Shulman. Most people call me Rafa. I am a game developer at heart and an entrepreneur by passion rather than necessity. When I was a kid, I made silly little games out of paper for my parents and I to play. Always something simple like Monopoly or The Game of Life, but just juiced up a bit to be more interesting. Those games were all poorly made and usually used as an excuse for me to win at something, but it accurately points to the beginning of my career in games. In elementary school, I played imaginary games with my friends where I would pretend to be monsters or shopkeepers, and my friends would run around and complete imaginary objectives that I would be the sole judge of if they were completed. I used to write down ideas in a notebook for what I could do next or what kind of awesome power I could display or grant. When I got a bit older, I got more interested in virtual games. I made some fun downloadable worlds in Minecraft that others could use to play little mini games inside the game that is Minecraft. I got pretty into it, but never really had much of a rousing success. Then, after the pandemic came my first real delving into the world of game development. I decided I’d played enough games that I could just make my own, better game. So, I drew and wrote on some blank cards and playtested with my friends, then I saw the potential and kept working at it. It reminded me so much of the games of my youth that I would spend hours just theorizing on how to make the game more fun, look better, and work smoother. I ended up selling some early copies that, at the time, I thought were a crude version of a finished game. Little did I know that I would be making more changes at the same time I was trying to get funding through Kickstarter. My backers did not quite get the game that was advertised, but it was close enough, according to most of them, and better in the opinions of many, myself included. Now that I’ve had a finished game for a while and have seen the kind of struggles one can have when attempting to bring a new game to shelves, I wanted to make a difference for other creators who might not have the connections or expertise to bring an idea to a fully marketed game. Stone Sprite Games is my way of sharing what I have accumulated through my vast amount of unnecessarily pioneered game development knowledge and providing a space for game developers to find success in releasing a game, even if it was only ever meant to be a fun idea.
